Mathematics
Numeracy is a core curriculum subject and is taught using a variety of schemes and resources. The daily numeracy lesson takes places in both Key Stage One and Two. Children are introduced to new concepts in a practical way. Their knowledge is then consolidated and extended through work differentiated to children’s own working levels.
Computers and games are an integral part of our numeracy teaching which help children to memorise facts, practise skills and improve their own learning.
To develop our children’s understanding of mental maths, we use a programme called ‘I can do maths’. All Key Stage Two children complete a mental maths test independently throughout the week which is pitched at their individual levels. At the end of the week all children on the same levelled test, despite age, come together for a marking session where any misconceptions are corrected through good teacher modelling.
We use problem solving and investigational tasks to provide children with opportunities to use their skills and make links with everyday situations. We use an ‘Investigation Frame’ to assist children’s thinking and learning processes in their investigations.
Each year we hold an exciting Maths Week, when children take part in competitions, quizzes and mathematical activities.
All of our children have a numeracy target each term. These targets are displayed in each classroom and shared with parents. Teachers provide children with opportunities within their teaching to meet their targets.
We feel that the vocabulary of numeracy is paramount to children achieving well. Therefore all our learning environments have vocabulary displays which support children’s learning.
