Curriculum Areas
English
The development of children’s language plays a central role in their acquisition of skills across the curriculum. We aim to help all children to become competent readers, writers, speakers and listeners and to enjoy language and literature. We use a variety of approaches in the teaching of reading, including the PACT reading scheme in collaboration with parents. The school has well stocked classroom libraries and holds an annual Book Week during which we have various authors in school, reading from their published works and running writing workshops for children.
Literacy hour takes place daily throughout Key Stages One and Two.
From the beginning children are encouraged to have a go at writing for themselves and to write for different audiences and purposes. Neat, legible, joined-up writing is taught from Reception onwards.
